Irish Government

Did you know that the Irish Government is committed to improving the lives of all children living here in Ireland?

UN Convention on the Rights of the Child

By ratifying  the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1992, this means that the Irish Government has agreed to be legally bound by the Articles in the Convention.

Below are some of the other bodies set up or run by the government to help children:

1. Office of the Minister for Children

Children will now have a stronger voice on issues that affect them, through the Minister for Children, Barry Andrews TD, who will attend all Cabinet meetings.

2. Office of the Ombudsman for Children

This Office was established under a Goverment Act called the "Ombudsman for Children Act" in 2002.
The appointment of Emily Logan, as the new Ombudsman for Children, took place in March 2004.

The main purpose of the Ombudsman role for Children is to safeguard and promote the rights and interests of children and young people under the age of eighteen.
